Indigenous claims go up in smoke

A favorite Lowcountry spy living way up north sent us a tip. Seems that Buffy Sainte-Marie, the Oscar-winning folk icon who built a five-decade career on claiming Indigenous identity, has been stripped of her honorary University of Toronto Doctor of Law degree after a birth certificate surfaced showing Massachusetts-born parents of Italian American descent. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation investigation that triggered the revocation found no documentary evidence supporting her claims of Cree, Mi’kmaw and Algonquin ancestry, contradicting the biographical narrative that fueled 15 honorary doctorates and a pioneering “First Indigenous” Academy Award. According to unnamed sources, Sainte-Marie got the idea to tell her gigantic ancestry whopper to boost her career from U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. At least Sen. Warren has kept her law degree … so far.

Smells like victory

Battles against the woke crowd rage forward … Due to the work of the American Heritage Association and their allies, the Heritage Act 2.0 (S. 508) is now law, as South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has inked it. It seems the leftists’ desire to “add value” to history is gone with the wind. Sadly, it is noteworthy that the Preservation Society of Charleston, through Sen. Ed Sutton (D-S.C.), looked to stop or amend this legislation, demonstrating yet again that Mr. Alexander was correct in his May article in the Charleston Mercury: Woke is still awake.

Pinching, not thanking, the clerk who allegedly erred

The legal defense team for Alex Murdaugh has announced a lawsuit against the clerk whose actions resulted in the overturning of his conviction of murdering his wife and son. Yes, that says “lawsuit,” not “thank you note.”

Those persistent bruins

Meanwhile in Black Mountain, Clay Milton said she was home alone a few weeks ago when she heard what sounded like someone had broken in, reports WLOS of Asheville. “She came down to the base of the landing to look and see and there was the bear right at the bottom of the stairs,” said Lisa Milton, who was out of town when her daughter, Clay, had the bear encounter. After lots of shouting, Milton managed to get the bear back outside. But it didn’t end there. The bear was standing in her doorway on its hind legs trying to push the door back open as Milton worked to get it shut. She explained that after three hard tries, she was finally able to get the door fully shut and latch the dead bolt.

Now, a new law?

According to the North Carolina Wildlife officials, there have been a few break-ins by bears in Black Mountain and also Haw Creek. Wildlife officials also report that six black bears, including two yearlings, were euthanized after these separate home break-ins. Residents of Black Mountain are considering whether to impose possible penalties for anyone caught feeding bears. Black Mountain Mayor Michael Sobol suggested a fine of up to $1,000 for flipping Yogi a “yum-yum.” So far, it’s not clear exactly when a decision will be finalized.

Dam Boat Run at Lake Murray

The Dam Boat Run returns to Lake Murray the last weekend in May and promises to be the biggest race so far. More than 100 powerboats from across the country are expected to take part, creating a high-energy atmosphere on the water and along the shoreline.

This year introduces a new way to experience the lake with helicopter tours available to the public May 29–31. These flights offer a one-of-a-kind aerial view of Lake Murray while supporting a meaningful cause, adding an unforgettable perspective to the weekend’s activities.

Brookgreen Gardens Memorial Day 5k

The annual Brookgreen Gardens Memorial Day Weekend 5K Run/Walk will be held this Sunday in Murrells Inlet. The race will begin at 6 p.m. and will take runners and walkers through the Sculpture Garden Course at Brookgreen Gardens, a 9,100-acre property known for its gardens, sculptures, zoo and nature trails. Those who take part will receive a race shirt (while supplies last), a bib, and a custom medal, along with complimentary admission to Brookgreen Gardens for a later visit. The event will also collect donations for the Blue Star Mothers of Coastal Carolina during packet pickup and on race day.

The Land: Ha’aretz. הארץ

Ha’aretz. הארץ, means land or earth. It appears throughout the Bible with both a physical and spiritual connection. It is the word used in connection with the creation of the world at the beginning of Genesis. God creates the heavens and the earth — et ha-shamayim v’et ha-aretz, את השמים ואת הארץ Humans are given special responsible for the care of the earth, its stewardship.

The word eretz is used in connection with Israel — called Eretz Yisrael, ארץ ישראל. Eretz Israel is not just any land, but the land given to the Jews by God, a central theme in Scripture. Judaism and the land of Israel are connected, part of the Covenant. Many Jewish prayers are related to Israel, its weather and agricultural cycles, representing not only a homeland but a place of holiness and purpose.

The Land, Ha-Aretz, is a common way Israelis refer to Israel — no further explanation is needed when the word is used. Ha-Aretz means Israel.

Contemporary art in Lake City

This weekend in Lake City, you will have the chance to view the exhibits of the winners of the ArtFields competition, where Southern artists competed for up to $100,000 in prize money. The 2026 grand prize went to Jason Lord for a work titled “Gathering Place,” currently on display at The ROB in downtown Lake City. Second place went to Kelly Riek’s “Series Five, No.4 Farm Fields” at Jones-Carter Gallery.

Winners of the top prizes are required to leave their work in Lake City so that the town can build a unique contemporary art collection throughout the years. If you would like to support local art, this is a great time to visit Lake City and see some of the work that will help shape the town’s growing collection for years to come.

Indulge in the beauty of nature with the Moonlight Paddle Float on May 30

Come to Cheraw State Park and Explore the 361-acre Lake Juniper located in the heart of Cheraw State Park. This event will begin at 7:30, so that guests can catch a beautiful view of the sunset from the lake. During your float, guests can be on the lookout for the countless creatures living there like river otters, largemouth bass, sunfish and many more. Guests can borrow one of the kayaks or canoes from the state park or you may bring your own. While paddling around Lake Juniper, you can explore all its nooks and crannies, like the cypress knees and rock formation that are located around the lake.

Because this is a night paddle, only guests who are 14 and older with prior kayak or canoe experience are permitted to go on this moonlight float. The trip will last about two to three hours, and guests will be back to the shore before it gets totally dark. Guests should bring some water and light snacks for the trip, and all participants must wear a life jacket at all times. Tickets for this event are $30 per person.

Come to downtown Cleo and enjoy the Ribs and Rods Festival

Indulge in a rib cook-off, live music, a car show and delicious vendors on May 30 at the Ribs and Rods Festival. Bring your vintage car and appreciate all of the variety of cars presented at the car show. To register your car for the car show, you will have to pay a $25 fee and fill out a form with your information. During the car show, you will be able to walk up to any cars that you are interested in and look under the hood and ask the owner all about it. If guests aren’t interested in cars, you can put your barbecue skills to the test and register for the ribs cook-off.

Even if you don’t register for the cook-off event, you can still sample the delicious food from the competitors. If you don’t care for barbecue, there will be countless vendors at the event selling all kinds of food. And on top of all the fun event, there will be live music playing in the background from Americana and country bands. This event will start at 11:00 a.m. and won’t conclude until 9:00 p.m.

Asheville Blue Ridge Rose Society Rose Exhibition May 22 – 24

Come to the Springdale resort May 24 and revel in the mountainous beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and indulge in the bluegrass sound of the region. Balsam Range will be headlining the event and are one of the most popular bluegrass bands in the area. They were founded in 2007 and since then they have dazzled fans all over the Blue Ridge Region and have won two International Bluegrass Music Association Entertainer of the Year Awards. The Holler Choir will also be playing during this festival; there sound is a mix of bluegrass, Americana and Appalachian Indiepop.

While listening to the performers, barbecue and sides will be available to purchase and enjoy on-site. This event will be set on a lawn with no chairs or blankets, so it is encouraged that guests bring either a towel, blanket, or chair to sit on. This family fun event, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 23, offers a fun showing for not only premier kite flying — of which there will be plenty — but also arts and crafts, food vendors, music and more. If you don’t have a kite, the festival quips, “Fret not”: children under 12 will receive free kites they can personally decorate.

Puckhaber, Buddy. —Charleston. George L. “Buddy” Puckhaber, Jr. died on May 17. His funeral service will be held Friday, May 22 at the Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, 714 Riverdale Drive, Charleston, S.C. at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church an hour prior to the service. Burial will be private. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

He was born in Riverside Infirmary (now called the Jonathan Lucas House) on Thanksgiving Day, November 29, 1934. He was the only son of George L. Puckhaber and Fredica Siemers Altman. He was the fourth member of the Puckhaber family to be christened George Louis.

Buddy attended the schools of Charleston, graduating from Rivers High School in 1952 and The Citadel in 1956 where he earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. In 1990 he retired as director of planning, Southern Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command. He then worked as a project engineer for Soil Consultants, Inc. of Charleston from where he retired in 1999. He was a professional engineer in South Carolina and a former president of The Civil Engineers Club of Charleston.

In 1961 he married Margaret A. Phillips on Easter Sunday in the Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, Charleston. They had two children, George L Puckhaber of Los Angeles, and Rhonda P. Myers of Charleston. His survivors are his wife, son, and daughter, son-in-law Scott Myers, and grandson Noah E Myers.

Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 714 Riverdale Drive, Charleston, S.C. 29407.

Come to the Bear Shadow Music Festival next weekend in Highlands

Music and saw off at the Swain County Heritage Festival

Get excited because the annual Swain County Heritage Festival begins this Friday. Friday evening, from 6-9 p.m., hosts a Southern Gospel music listening event, featuring gospel classics like Brian Burchfield, the Barnes family, and the Dyer Family Gospel. Everyone’s welcome to join in and sing along if you can carry a tune and maybe tap along if your tune needs carrying.

Saturday presents even more wholesome entertainment.

There will be an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Rangers Camp, with the firing of an old cannon and a three-round volley, followed by bluegrass, folk and country music. You will also discover some historic clog dancing and an antique cross saw off. Do I need to say more? This festival is just the sort of thing to make any true Appalachian grin from ear to ear.

Experience the rich art and culture of Charleston at Piccolo Spoleto Festival

Launched just a couple years after Spoleto was founded in 1977, Piccolo Spoleto was created to celebrate the talented artists in Charleston and the Southeast. Events are held all over Charleston like a concert under the Angel Oak Tree or an orchestra in front of the United States Custom House. Every Piccolo Spoleto event is either $10 or completely free, in an attempt to make this festival accessible to all locals in Charleston.

More than a dozen different events during this 17-day festival will be tailored to children, like the sand sculpting competition on Isle of Palms or Kid’s Karaoke at the Cannon Street Arts Center. The festival will kick off on May 22 with the Sunset Serenade performed by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra in front of the Custom House. Eight rescued near Station 16 on Sullivan’s Island

Swimming in the ocean is never to be confused with your swimming pool, lake or river; each has its own threat levels. The waters up and down the Carolina coast will claim many of those who are unaware.

Fortunately, we have some first responder heroes on Sullivan’s Island, and they kept disaster at bay. At 4:43 p.m. May 16, Sullivan’s Island Fire and Rescue received a call reporting swimmers in distress near Station 16. Crews arrived at 4:48 p.m. — yes, in a mere five minutes — and found multiple swimmers being swept out by strong currents.

Firefighters launched a jet ski rescue and brought eight people safely back to shore as they held onto a rescue board. One victim, a 23-year-old man, was unconscious and not breathing when rescuers reached him.

Firefighters removed the victim from the water, carried him to shore and placed him in the recovery position. The patient regained consciousness and began breathing shortly afterward.

EMS personnel were brought onto the beach, and firefighters assisted with transporting the patient to an awaiting ambulance. The patient was then taken to the Medical University of South Carolina, with a firefighter driving the ambulance and an escort provided by the fire chief.

At this time, the incident remains under investigation, and no additional details are being released.

Try your own hand at it, and before long, you’ll be writing much like your forefathers once did.

Learn how to make Sweetgrass Baskets at Wild Dunes this week

Enjoy a day of learning Charleston history and creating handcrafted sweetgrass baskets at the Sweetgrass Inn. The history of sweetgrass baskets in Charleston goes all the way back to the late 17th century when enslaved people would create early forms of the baskets called fanners to rice kernels from the chaff. After the War Between the States, formerly enslaved weavers started crafting smaller and more decorative versions of the fanners and would sell them on highway 17. Sweetgrass baskets serve a large role in South Carolina history and have become a huge part of Charleston and Gullah culture.

During the workshop, staff at the Sweetgrass Inn will guide you in this complicated process and give you tips along the way. You don’t need any experience creating these baskets, but because of the complexity of the process only those older than eight are permitted to participate in this event. At the end of the day, you will be able to bring it home and enjoy your handcrafted creation.

Calling all Scotsmen: Celebrate Celtic culture at Gallabrae

Grab your kilt, pour a glass of your tastiest malty ale and attend a most bonnie weekend in the highlands of the Upstate at Gallabrae: the Greenville Scottish Games. A large parade will take place on Friday, May 22, at 6:00 p.m. in downtown Greenville, marching north on Main Street from Broad Street and the Peace Center areas to East North Street.

The main games are Saturday, May 23, at Furman University, with gates opening at 8:30 a.m.; highlights include pipe bands, marching clans, heavy athletics, food and merchandise vendors, Wee Scotland kids’ activities, Border Collie herding demonstrations and the British Car Show on Furman’s mall. Another must-see is the Military Salute at 11:30 a.m. sharp on Saturday on the main field, followed later by the Celtic Jam and Scottish Happy Hour in the Entertainment Tent after the awards ceremony.

Greenville Greek Festival: great weather, record crowds

Those wanting to be “Greek for a Day” had a great opportunity this past weekend at the 40th annual Greek Festival at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Greenville. An estimated more than 10,000 attended during the Friday-Sunday, May 15 - 17 event. Festival goers tasted and witnessed Greek culture with a wide assortment of Greek food and drink, while listening to Greek music and watching authentic Greek dances performed by young people from the Greek Orthodox congregation.

Attendees wanting to know more about Greek Orthodox beliefs were invited to

attend showings of the church interior with explanations of how the many icons and pictures relate to Orthodox theology. The Greenville Greek Orthodox Church was established in 1936 and their present cathedral at 406 No. Academy Street was completed in 1995.

“A Line in Place” exhibition by Robert Jameson will be open until the 24th for its last week in downtown Greenville. The exhibit is being held at Centre Stage Gallery, 501 River St., and will be open from Tuesday to Friday from 2–5 p.m. and two hours before the theatre houses’ performances.

Through his artwork, Jameson attempts to explore the tension between order and individuality, using lines as both a framework and a guide for the viewer’s eye. ‘Unite the Kingdom’ rally gives hope but fertility rate is key to future

On May 16, hundreds of thousands of British attended the “Unite the Kingdom” (UTK) rally. This rally came despite a concerted effort by the United Kingdom’s ruling Labor Party to demonize the rally as “far right” “racist” and “divisive.” Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the organizers “criminals and thugs” and Labor warned those attending would be recorded by facial recognition cameras. According to The Spectator of the event: “There were no mass chants calling for the death of particular groups, no calls for the eradication of foreign countries, and no flags of terrorist groups or tyrannical theocracies …. Nobody cited scripture to urge the slaughter of another people, nobody waved terrorist symbols.” Yet “Keir Starmer decided to speak out against (it) …. threatening police action and the full force of the law against those involved, and pulling out all the stops to block foreign speakers from entering the country at the last minute.” https://spectator.com/article/much-of-the-traditional-media-coverage-referred-to-these-two-marches-as-the-far-right-march-and-the-pro-palestine-march/?edition=us In contrast, a pro-Palestinian demonstration held at the same time in London included chants to “Shoot him in the neck like Charlie Kirk”. https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/shoot-him-in-neck-like-charlie-kirk-chants-at-uks-pro-palestine-rally-11508260 That protest was praised by Labor and media allies. The success of the UTK rally against the progressive resistance was encouraging, but the key to the future of the West lies in the West’s negative fertility rate.

A quarter century ago, Pat Buchanan published his book Death of the West. Buchanan predicted much of what we see now in Europe, as he noted the acute negative birthrate throughout Western Europe drove harmful immigration policy. Buchanan exposed that immigration to Europe was primarily from Third World Middle East, African, and Asian countries with much higher birthrates. https://mises.org/mises-review/death-west-how-dying-populations-and-immigrant-invasions-imperil-our-country-and-civilization-patrick-buchanan Not only did Western Europe not heed the warnings but doubled down. They even started attacking those noticing. Western European countries passed speech laws criminalizing critique of the disastrous migration policy and related issues.

America is not immune and following the pattern. Last year, the CDC released data showing America has followed the plummeting European birthrate and corresponding problems: “Overall, the number of births (in the United States) declined by two percent per year, on average, from 2015 through 2020 and fluctuated in the years since.” https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/fertility-rate-was-stable-2024-still-record-lows-rcna202657. Until the mid-2000s, the U.S. birthrate was at or above the maintenance level of 2.1 average children per woman. It then fell to 1.6 after 2008. As migration increased, attacks on Western culture in America ramped up significantly. In 2025, the Trump administration proposed fighting low fertility with money to new mothers. The left exploded in criticism. Last year, the President of Dublin University, Ireland, gave insight into the thought process of elites in Europe doubling down on failed policy. From the Irish Times: “Ireland’s native population could be in a minority by the middle of this century, the president of Dublin City University (DCU) will claim today. But large-scale immigration is still essential if we are to remain prosperous, Prof Ferdinand von Prondzynski will say …. Universities have a particular obligation to prepare the country for the increasingly multicultural nature … Inter-cultural studies and research should be prioritized …. Universities should also be ‘active contributors’ to anti-racism policies (in industry and government).”

If and when the Irish become a minority in Ireland, their civilization will not survive.

Sadly, despite the dim prospects for the West, the left appears to fight for a low birthrate. In recent years, several liberal female celebrities have publicized their alleged joy of being middle aged and childless seeking to encourage this lifestyle choice. https://www.businessinsider.com/never-had-the-urge-have-children-im-childless-and-happy-2023-4 Whenever negative Western birthrates are mentioned, left-leaning media sources will inevitably attack the alleged evil “pronatalist” movement and scream racism.

The birthrate crisis goes beyond current numbers into future challenges. In 2021, Pew Research Center published a survey report claiming: “a rising number of childless adults claim they are unlikely to have children. Of the non-parents aged 18 to 49 who were surveyed, 44 percent said it is ‘not too likely’ or ‘not at all likely’ that they would procreate, an increase of seven percent from 2018. And 74 percent of polled adults under 50 said they were unlikely to have more children after having one or two.” https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/11/19/growing-share-of-childless-adults-in-u-s-dont-expect-to-ever-have-children/ With the plummeting birthrate comes attacks on the family through attacks on marriage (note: Children of broken families have poorer mental health and future employment and less likely to be married and have children. https://www.thepublicdiscourse.com/2013/02/7821/). Family expert, Carle Zimmerman, wrote of the connection of a high birth to the strength of families: “we see [ever] more clearly the role of proles or childbearing as the main stem of the family… the basis of (strong, enduring families) is the (high) birth rate…. . We must continue to support events like Unite the Kingdom and fight to reverse destructive policies designed to destroy Western freedom and culture. At the same time, we must fight for marriage and childbearing in the West. Let us take Psalm 127:3 to heart: “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.”

Watch the Southern Conference Baseball Tournament in Greenville this weekend

Come to Fluor Field this weekend and watch the top teams in the Southern Conference battle for the coveted SoCon Championship. Eight teams will compete in this double elimination bracket that begins on Wednesday, and the winner will be crowned on Saturday. The top seeded team is Mercer which is 43-13 overall and 15-6 in their conference; they are fresh from an eight-game winning streak.

The first game of the tournament will start at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday with the Citadel playing VMI in a heated rivalry game that goes all the way back to 1920. The winner of this tournament will be given a spot in the NCAA Baseball Tournament that starts on May 29. Samford has been to the SoCon Championship four out of the last five years, but they’ve only won it twice. Last year, East Tennessee State beat Samford in the final game by a score of 7-5. There will be cafes right on the lake so you may enjoy delicious food and refreshing drinks all day while on the lake. A live DJ will be playing tunes from the edge of the shore and setting the mood for a blast of a weekend. This is a family-friendly event, so bring your children for bonding time on the water.

Guests aren’t required to float on a tube; guests will also be able to kayak, canoe, paddleboard and more. Art crawl in downtown Fort Mill

The Pratt approach

L.A.’s viral mayoral candidate should be a model for conservative campaigns.

It is rare that mayoral campaigns receive national attention, but Spencer Pratt’s bid for mayor of Los Angeles has. Since his initial campaign announcement in January, Pratt has been gaining momentum and is now polling in second place behind incumbent L.A. Mayor Karen Bass. His campaign has primarily focused on restoring the city to its former glory, particularly in the wake of the damage from the horrific Palisades fires of 2025. Two weeks ago, he uploaded his now-viral campaign ad, featuring the hit song “Not Like Us,” as he showed off the untouched properties of Mayor Bass and city councilmember Nithya Raman. The video then showcases the charred ruins where Pratt’s home previously stood, along with the trailer he now resides in.

Whatever the fate of Pratt’s campaign, he has hit on a messaging strategy that right-wing candidates would do well to emulate going forward if they want to be successful in the digital age. Conservatives have had trouble breaking out of their image as out-of-touch intellectuals. Pratt’s message has more emotional impact. And his language is assertive. In the past, Republican leaders like George W. Bush, Mitt Romney and Mike Pence had a cultural reputation for being passive. Pratt’s ad makes him look like something out of the John Wick action series.

In the late 2000s, Pratt rose to fame on the reality television series The Hills. At the time, he was known as something of an antagonist, not unlike Trump when he appeared on his own television series, The Apprentice. Pratt is using the skills he developed in Hollywood to focus on the problems regular Angelenos suffer under liberal leadership — ballooning homeless encampments, family-destroying traffic in lethal drugs, and mismanaged animal shelters that unfairly euthanize dogs. Each of his main issues is effectively communicated in an emotionally compelling way.

Pratt’s campaign is the kind that could emerge only in the post-Trump era. In each of President Trump’s campaigns, he used his skills as an entertainer to communicate his agenda. “Make America Great Again” became a resonating success because it quickly and clearly explained his ideology. His one-liners in debates and rallies have engaged his audiences and proven sticky in the online meme economy, giving them long afterlives and wide reach. Photos of Trump driving a garbage truck and working at a McDonald’s were used to convey his affection for hard work. And just as Pratt used the high-energy song “Not Like Us,” Trump commandeered the anthem “YMCA,” turning it into a MAGA staple.

Traditional communications methods like yard signs and mailers are still important in politics, but there is a growing requirement for candidates to have a strong social media presence. About 51 percent of Gen Z teenagers get their news primarily from social media, and the consumption rates of adults who get their news from social media platforms are consistently growing. If politicians want to connect with voters, especially the next generation of voters, they will have to become good communicators online.

If conservatives don’t internalize this message, liberals certainly will. Many already have. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a radical socialist, won a resounding victory thanks in part to his social media skills. He did a good job talking to residents, explaining perceived problems and appearing to be a good-natured provider. He leaned into showing emotion, such as when he tearfully told the story of his aunt who couldn’t ride the subway after 9/11 — even though he didn’t actually have an aunt living in New York in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. He has tried to appear friendly, singing songs and dancing for preschoolers while alongside former President Obama. He has even managed to tell a few jokes, such as when he appeared on the Tonight Show.

Mamdani’s charm won him the election in New York, and Pratt’s charm could do the same in Los Angeles. Conservatives shouldn’t mimic Mamdani’s dishonesty, but they need to be prepared to lean into their own distinctive charisma. Regardless of the outcome in his election, Pratt can help show the way. Conservatives who want to keep winning in the next few years need to pay attention.

Flopeye Festival this Memorial Day weekend

Every Thursday from April to August, there will be a concert at Morgan Square with alternating bands playing, like Soul Intent and the Revival. This Thursday the band Queen’s Court will be playing at Morgan Square; they are from Charlotte and play party tunes. Food and drink venders will be at Morgan Square, keeping the band and crowd fed and quenched. Music on Main doesn’t only put on a great show; they also give back to the community.

Members of different clubs serve as volunteers for the Music on Main Concert, and in return the volunteers receive a percentage of the sales from the concert to go to their local civic organization. For this event, guests will watch the concert from the grass at Morgan Square, so bringing a chair or towel to sit on is highly recommended. This concert is completely free, but guests should bring cash and an ID if they want to order any food or drinks from any of the delicious venders at the event.

18th Century Apothecary Workshop in New Bern

Come to the Tryon Palace this Saturday in New Bern to hear about what you would do if you were ill or injured in the 18th century. Join Charles Brett, apothecary-surgeon, to explore period medical treatments and the role of medical practitioners in colonial North Carolina.

What you’ll learn
As an apothecary’s apprentice, you’ll review surgical and bandaging principles to treat injuries and explore the healing properties of medicinal plants. As part of this workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to compound a medicinal recipe for treating ailments using period tools and techniques.

Celebrate the beginning of summer with the Festival of Gardens that gives you unprecedented access to eleven beautiful gardens in the Forest Hills Neighborhood. All proceeds from this event go to Columbia Green, which is an organization that partners with non-profits to bring more public greenspaces to Columbia. Forest Hills and the private gardens in it was developed in 1925 from the former grounds of Confederate General Wade Hampton III’s Diamond Estate after his estate was burned in 1865 and turned into Abney Park before turning into the historic neighborhood we know today.

The gardens in this neighborhood are usually blocked off to the public, but during this festival, guests will get unlimited access to all of them. During the tour, guests should be on the lookout for art displays that are scattered throughout from a selection of ten artists. Each art display will be on sale for all the guests at the festival.

Likewise, the event will feature a keynote speaker: Bob Raynor, who will speak on South Carolina’s “Wild Coast,” exploring the natural beauty, wildlife, history and growing conservation challenges of the undeveloped coastline from Capers Island to North Inlet.

Unlocking cultural treasure, Part XXXVIII

Satan. סטן. Sa-tahn

Satan is the transliterated Hebrew word Satan סטן (sah-TAHN), meaning “adversary.” Satan occurs 27 times in the Hebrew Bible, meaning an adversary, subservient to God. Satan is generally used in the Bible to designate a human entity. For example, Satan is used to refer to David’s enemies when he fought the Philistines (1 Samuel 29:4).

Specific enemies of Solomon are also labeled Satan: “Then the Lord raised up an adversary/Satan/ סטן against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite.” There is another enemy of Solomon, Rezon son of Eliadah. “He was an adversary/Satan of Israel all the days of Solomon, making trouble as Hadad did” (1 Kings 11:14, 23, 25). Thus, in the Hebrew Bible, Satan is used in reference to human enemies who posed a political or military threat to a person or nation. It is usually used with the definite article — the adversary, הסטן.

Satan less frequently refer to nonhuman adversaries in the Hebrew Bible. Even an “angel of the Lord” acted as a Satan: “And God’s anger was kindled [against Balaam] because he went [with Balak’s messengers]: and the Angel of the Lord stood in the way for an adversary/haSatan against him . . . . And the angel of the Lord said to him, ‘For what reason did you strike your donkey these three times?’ (Numbers 22:22, 32) The donkey is given the power of speech and explains this wonderfully to Balaam.

Within Jewish theology, Satan, the adversary, is always subservient to God. In Christian literature, Satan becomes a powerful enemy of God, representing evil. Thus, the interpretation of Satan in the Book of Job is quite different for Jews and Christians. In Jewish interpretation, when Job remains faithful to God, Satan/ the adversary rejoices with the other angels. In Christian interpretation, Satan tempts Job and loses to God.

There is no concept of a Devil as a separate personality in Jewish Biblical or religious thought. Although Hebrew storytellers as early as the sixth century B.C.E. occasionally introduced a supernatural character whom they called the Satan, this is a literary device.

Another example of the split in Jewish and Christian interpretations occurs in the story of the Garden of Eden’s snake. The snake/Nahash/נחש is simply a snake in Jewish translations and interpretations, albeit a talking, intelligent one! Adam, Eve and the snake each receive consequences, punishments, for their wrongdoing. Later Christian translations often render the word snake as Satan, not used in Genesis and never in Jewish translations or interpretations. In the Septuagint, the first Jewish translation of the Bible into Greek in the third century BCE, the word Satan is rendered diabolos, slanderer or plotter. In Christian thought, Satan becomes the devil, a powerful spirit of evil, a proper name, a specific entity. This concept does not exist in Judaism.

Enchanting Wildflower Walk at Boone Fork

On May 17 from 1:30-3 p.m., Grandfather Mountain ranger Amelia Gallina and Woodsong Nature Guide’s Becca Nenow will be hosting a “Wildflower Walk.” This walk will take place at the base of Grandfather Mountain, where late spring brings a wealth of wildflowers in the woods and along the river to see and experience. The guides suggest: “Bring layers for warmth or rain, water, a journal for notes, and sturdy shoes for roots and rocks.”

Fiber frolic fun at the Hickory Ridge History Museum

This event is fun for the whole family, with children older than five years old being able to participate in this class.

You don’t need any prior experience attending this event, and staff will be walking around the class to help anyone with their pottery. Guests will create two pottery bowls, one to donate to the International Friendship Center and one to keep for yourself. After the event, guests can either ship the bowl to their house, or they may pick it up. The bowls are usually ready about a week or two after the event.

Rim hike: pinnacle of Blue Ridge

The hike will be a loop hike of six miles and includes two strenuous ascents, two steep descents, some rock scrambling on three rocky summits, and some moderate off-trail hiking. The return will be back to the Parkway via the Mt. Mitchell Toll Road. Hikers will carpool from Black Mountain to the Parkway. S.C. Sen. Massey opposes Trump: ‘I got too much Southern in my blood’

South Carolina Senators killed efforts to redraw the state’s congressional districts on Tuesday, rejecting a proposal that would have allowed lawmakers to return after the legislative session to take up redistricting. The 29-17 vote failed, with just two votes short of the two-thirds needed. Five Republicans joined all the Democrats in the chamber to reject the proposal.

Trump said on social media Monday that he was closely watching the redistricting vote, urging S.C. senators to “be bold and courageous” and to delay the House primaries so new districts can be drawn.

Although Republicans have a supermajority in the chamber, some GOP senators weren’t sure the proposed map would guarantee the party could unseat longtime Democratic U.S. Rep. James Clyburn. They also said it could push enough Democrats into other districts to backfire, resulting in a 5-2 or even a 4-3 Republican split.

South Carolina Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey acknowledged the pressure from Trump, but he said he doesn’t like being asked to bend to someone’s will instead of doing what’s best for his state.

“I got too much Southern in my blood,” Massey said. “I’ve got too much resistance in my heritage.”

This drama no doubt has other episodes ahead for Carolina observers.

The South Carolina Senate voted down the House’s amended sine die resolution shortly before 5 p.m., ending the possibility of lawmakers reconvening later this year to debate new congressional maps before the close of the legislative session. The only way forward is if Governor McMaster calls a special session, but he has previously said he will not do that

Sen. Massey was one of the five votes against redrawing the districts; Sen. Chip Campsen was another.

Beaufort County in the Revolutionary War – Boat Tour

Revolutionary War buffs will be keen to come this Saturday for a three-hour boat tour, which departs from the South Beach dock on Hilton Head Island and travels along the Calibogue Sound shoreline, down the western side of the Daufuskie Island to Bloody Point. It then returns along the Bull Island shoreline, passing Buch Island before concluding at Braddock Cove around 4:30. Historians of the American Revolutionary period will narrate information and stories about the Revolutionary War on various land sites that the boat passes by.

The boat tour, at $70 per person, is provided by Salty Dog Tours of HHI, a double-decker catamaran, with two restrooms, a full cash bar, and snacks for purchase. The tour is weather-dependent and timed to coincide with favorable tides.

Summerville to hold groundbreaking ceremony for new public safety campus

The town of Summerville invites all to the groundbreaking of their new Public Safety Campus facility. The facility is a $ 47.5 million project that plans to integrate the police, fire and municipal departments into one 75,000-square-foot campus, along with a 200-spot parking garage. This building aims to replace the current public safety campus, which was built in 1989. Town officials claim the 1989 building has become obsolete, particularly as the town’s growing population has increased the demands on public departments.

Saltwater fishing trends for lower coast

Inshore: Captain Rob Bennett (843) 367-3777 and Captain Addison Rupert (843) 557-3476 report that May should be an excellent month for catching trout on live shrimp with lots of big spawning females around, and the redfish should continue to be caught on a variety of cut and live baits in the creeks. At the jetties and in the harbor bull red drum will continue to arrive in increasingly better numbers this month, and cut menhaden and mullet are both effective. As bait returns to the area sharks are also showing up in droves and will continue to get more common this month.

Surf and pier: Folly Beach Pier (843) 762-9516 was already getting good for trout, black drum, Spanish mackerel and more by the end of April, but May should only be better and fish will be bigger. As more bait arrives the king mackerel should also be right behind the Spanish. The usual suspects of whiting, croaker, spot, and other good-eating panfish should also be caught.

Nearshore: Captain Rob Bennett (843) 367-3777 reports that May should be a phenomenal month for fishing at the nearshore reefs, and this month cobia, spadefish, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and more will all be biting. This will also be the peak month for dolphin fishing.

Inshore: Captain Ron Davis Jr. (843) 513-0143 reports that the redfish action should be decent on the rivers with a variety of baits this May, and fish will also be caught in the smaller creeks on mud minnows. Big spawning trout will be caught in the main rivers on shrimp or baitfish, and for both species there will be a topwater bite first thing. Flounder will flood back into the area and will take mud minnows, and there should be some more good sheepshead fishing on fiddler crabs before it gets very hot. In the surf and inlets whiting fishing will stay very strong with shrimp as bait, with the biggest fish found around sandbars.

Nearshore and offshore: Captain Ron reports on expectations for the nearshore reefs; cobia, spadefish, weakfish, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, bull red drum and more will be caught this month, while in 90-100 feet the bottom fishing will be strong throughout the month. Early May should be the peak for dolphin fishing, and wahoo and tuna should also be caught as well as some early marlin.

Beaufort

Inshore: Captain Tuck Scott (843) 524-5250 and Captain Patrick Kelly (843) 962-3503 report that as temperatures rise and even more bait starts to return in May the redfish should feed more regularly. The tailing activity at high tide should pick up as reds devour consistently available fiddler crabs, and fish should also eat better around the tide table in the creeks. If you can get live shrimp they are hard to beat, but finger mullet, small menhaden, mud minnows, and more will also catch redfish. Trout fishing should also pick up in the creeks and rivers, and both jigs and shrimp will catch fish — as well as finfish baits.

Big roe trout will be in the main rivers to spawn. But the most exciting development in May is usually that the cobia return in numbers to the Broad River. Some were already caught in late April, and people will catch them both sight-fishing and anchoring baits on the bottom. Tripletail, bluefish, ladyfish, and other migratory species will also be around in ever-greater numbers during May, and the bigger flounder should continue to show up after starting to trickle back inshore during April. Finally, don’t overlook the sheepshead bite on fiddler crabs – especially before it gets very hot and patterns change.

Inshore: Captain Kai Williams (843) 816-7475 and Captain Trent Malphrus (843) 301-4634 report that May is usually more consistent than April around Hilton Head, and they expect both redfish and trout to bite better this month. By the end of April there was already significant improvement with the reds while trout were still a little slow. Redfish will be caught in the creeks and rivers with a variety of baits including shrimp and finger mullet, and you will also pick up black drum on the shrimp. Trout should be eating live shrimp this month. Cobia should be around the Broad River through most of May.

Nearshore: Captain Kai reports that at the nearshore reefs and hard bottom areas migratory species like bluefish, Spanish mackerel and cobia will be caught.

Attacks on evangelical supporters of Israel are misguided and false

In a recent article, Politico contributor, Joshua Zeitz, wrote “How the Rapture Explains the Rupture over Israel on the Right.” Zeitz’s thesis was that a recent drop in support among young evangelicals for Israel comes because the young are shedding the alleged Christian Zionism of older Evangelicals. The Christian Zionism is what he claimed drove evangelical support.

Zeitz quoted from anti-Israel podcaster Tucker Carlson who claimed: “Christian Zionism ... is a brain virus ... a dangerous heresy.” Zeitz went on to say: “For decades, one of the most reliable pillars of pro-Israel sentiment in the United States was ... conservative Christians. That support had a theological motor … Put simply, Christians needed Jews to return to the homeland of Israel to usher in the second coming of Christ.” https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2026/03/08/gop-maga-israel-evangelicals-theology-premillennialism-00818312 This view of Zeitz, and a growing chorus, including those like Tucker, is now being used to blame evangelicals for putting Israel above national interest to theology. Though this attack is repeated as “Gospel,” it fails in reality.

First, the attacks from an anti-Israel faction of the political right started in earnest after the October 7, 2022, Hamas massacre. The alleged Jewish control of American politics was the first target. Attacks on AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) became ubiquitous, despite the AIPAC being exponentially outspent by Qatar and others. Podcasters of this “woke right” faction, like Candace Owens, railed against Israel and repeated the leftist lie of Israel committing genocide. Owens and others went beyond to laughable claims, like Jews being responsible for the slave trade.

Despite all the anti-Israel “woke right” attacks on Trump for supporting Israel and attacking Iran, a March 2026 New York Post article headlined: “Republicans have shown that this (anti-Israel) group has had little impact. Compared to prominent podcasters Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly, both of whom have criticized the president regarding the Iran war, the poll found 83 percent of likely Republican voters trust Trump’s judgment, while just six percent place more confidence in the former Fox News hosts.” The numbers are even worse for Tucker/Kelly in terms of trust in Trump concerning foreign policy and world affairs https://nypost.com/2026/03/19/us-news/republicans-overwhelmingly-back-trump-over-tucker-carlson-megyn-kelly-on-iran-war-poll-finds/

As the direct attacks against Israel, American Jews and AIPAC failed, the anti-Israel fringe blamed evangelicals as supporters of Israel. In a recent New York Times interview, Tucker alleged what the group is saying: “There are a lot of evangelical Christians who are convinced that God wants you to support [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu, which I find incomprehensible. … We have tens of millions of evangelical Christians who unquestioningly support Israel because they believe it’s their theological duty to do so … I find Israel actually geo-strategically irrelevant except to the extent that we imbue it with relevance at the behest largely of evangelical Christians.” https://mycharisma.com/news/tucker-carlson-is-angry-at-evangelicals-maybe-he-should-take-it-up-with-god/

The misguided attempt of this group to attack and stigmatize tens of millions of evangelicals regarding Israel requires a lack of shame rarely seen even in politics. Even a superficial investigation would show there is no agreed-upon “evangelical” theological position about Israel. Certainly, there are no doctrinal “evangelical” statements about forcing Jesus to come back by support for Israel. From my personal experience as an evangelical supporter of Israel, I have seen countless motivations but always include the importance of the alliance. Those Evangelicals of the reform tradition hold to Jesus Christ fulfilling the promises of the Old Testament. They are generally not pre-millennial dispensationalists, and yet many hold to the special place of the Jews in God’s eschatological plans from Romans 11. Many evangelicals believe the promises of Genesis 12:3: “I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you” and related scriptural promises stand. I personally don’t know any evangelicals who believe they must rebuild the Third Temple and/or drive Jews back to Israel to usher in the Second Coming.

My personal reason for supporting Israel is from my seven months on peacekeeping duty between Israel and Egypt. I had the opportunity to see everything on the ground on both sides. From what I saw then (and have followed in the news since) is that Israel has been our staunch ally and the “good guy,” just as they were throughout the Cold War (when the Arab neighbors aligned with the Soviets against the West). More than two million Arab Muslims live in Israel and, like Christians there, have all rights of citizenship including seats in the Knesset and the High Court. In Palestinian and Arab neighbor lands, there are virtually no Jews and open antisemitism. As a Christian, I felt much more secure in practicing my faith in Israel than on the Arab/Muslim side. Israel is most like us in values and our alliance does serve our national interest. That’s without my belief that God has a special place for the Jews in eschatology as per Romans 11.

It’s past time for all Americans to push back against forces who seek the destruction of Israel by dividing and stigmatizing Jews and those who love Jesus. There are various motivations for support Israel, but in the end, it comes down to doing the right thing

The meaning of the American creed

Equality and liberty rightly understood are bulwarks against despotism.

Are the principles of the Declaration the final truth at the end of history? Is the end of history lamentable? Does the war in Iran refute the end of history? Is the Declaration informed by a rational view of the universe or by revealed religion?

I have access neither to the world-historical spirit nor to prophetic signs, so I’ll begin with what has become a necessary task: to establish that the Declaration marks the founding of the American nation, to explain what it means, and to defend it against popular criticisms.

Some have tried to define America by the year 1619, because that is when slavery was established. Others opine that 1607 is the beginning of the United States, because that is when the English first settled in Jamestown. However, these are not true national origins, in part, because they do not recognize the independence of the U.S. from Great Britain. More importantly, they are wrong because neither of these events recognizes the fundamental principles of right that define the U.S.

A nation is not just its land or its past — as Aristotle argued, it is a regime. A tragic chorus is not the same as a comic chorus, even if it is made up of the same people in the same place. Even if the effects of slavery linger, as well as certain Puritan effects from the original settlers, the country is defined by neither. The U.S. is a liberal democracy, because its fundamental principles are freedom and equality. Those principles were not fully declared as the foundation and unifying purpose of the nation until 1776. If those principles were not in full effect at the time of their declaration, they were nonetheless the declared goal to which we ought to aspire as a nation.

A new beginning

Those who assert that 1619 is the definitive moment of national origin believe that the Declaration supports slavery, because freedom and equality were meant only for white, propertied males. To support this assertion, they invoke the fact that 13 years after the signing of the Declaration, the same nation ratified the Constitution even though it contained the Three-Fifths Clause and the Fugitive Slave Clause. Though these facts are true, their interpretation is incorrect. These two clauses prove only that it took a civil war and almost 90 years to bring the country into accord with its founding principles.

The founders themselves expressed their desire to end slavery, including Thomas Jefferson, who did not liberate his own slaves but recognized their right to be free. One can accuse him of hypocrisy, but not of having supported slavery in the Declaration. The Three-Fifths Clause and the Fugitive Slave Clause were compromises for the sake of maintaining the Union. Those compromises could not last — not for economic reasons, as Marxists assert, but for moral ones.

Self-government does not mean mob rule or even majority rule, but governance in accord with the self-evident truths “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These truths do not depend upon history or accident but upon the “Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God,” which are accessible to man as man regardless of time and place.

Nature and ancestry

Prior to the Declaration, peoples were connected to their nations through passionate and sentimental attachments to their ancestry. In the medieval world, kings were either descended from family lines or thought to be chosen directly by God. They were born to command, and subjects were born to obey. There was a caste, and wills were directed toward one another in a divine order.

Even in ancient Athens, there was no freedom and equality as we understand it. The Metics could not become citizens (or if they could it was exceedingly rare), because they were not of Athenian blood. Jus sanguinis was the rule. Slavery was perfectly compatible with Athenian democracy, and the Metics were subject to special taxes and punishments. Athenian democracy consisted of 25,000 citizens ruling over 250,000 slaves.

In the U.S., however, naturalization is part of the Constitution. The expectation that foreigners can become citizens follows directly from our creed. That creed is not “openness” or “inclusiveness,” but the belief in natural rights and the sovereignty of the people. Our heritage is this creed, and those who are willing and capable of living by it, in principle, can be assimilated into the American family.

Sovereignty and self-government

When comparing ancient Athens to the U.S., it is sometimes said that Athens had a “direct democracy” while we have an “indirect democracy.” These are misnomers, which mistake different kinds of democracies for different procedures. Our entire understanding of sovereignty differs from that of the ancient polis, because we limit and divide sovereignty to distinguish civil society from the state.

Civil society is prior to the state both in time and in nature. Our natural rights do not depend on the state, which exists to protect them. When the state is no longer directed to that end and exhibits “a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce [the governed] under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government.”

Sovereignty belongs to the people, and consequently, they elect their representatives who make the laws, and they have recourse to the “Supreme Judge of the world” should despotism arise. Yet sovereignty also belongs to the government, which ought to be obeyed “while evils are sufferable.” The government checks the people from anarchy and mob rule, and the people check the government from tyranny.

This balance between civil society and the state works only as long as there is a common good that enlightens them and joins them together in a common purpose. In other words, the common good must reign supreme in the mind and spirit of both the people and the government. That supreme source of enlightenment is the Declaration. As Calvin Coolidge argued, it is the fountainhead of the nation, and without it, the experiment in self-government must fail.

Today, the belief in the Declaration and its creed among Americans has been severely weakened, culminating in the muddying of its spring into relativism.

The Declaration and democratic relativism

In his dying days, a week before the 50th anniversary of the Declaration, Jefferson wrote to Roger Weightman. Jefferson accepted religious pluralism, provided that no religion sought to violate the religious freedom of any citizen. He also believed that pluralism would purge religions of their ambitions to persecute and to rule, since being one of numerous religions, their weakness would purge their desire for empire over others.

But political belief is different from religious belief. In politics, there are self-evident truths, and the belief in rights is authoritative. This is where relativism has proven most inimical to the Declaration. Multiculturalism and group rights have replaced the idea of individual liberties. Unlike the freedom of religion, these beliefs accompany a philosophy of power founded on the idea that there are no rational or self-evident truths upon which to build a common good. All right is just a “narrative” for power. If life is simply a clash of wills, there are no civil rights to mediate between the races, but only a competition between black power and white supremacy, or girl power and patriarchy, or rootless cosmopolitanism and rooted, indigenous peoples.

To grasp the peculiar character of this democratic form of will to power, we should consider Tocqueville’s thoughts about how barbarism will come to America. It will arrive not as it did in Rome, but as it did in China, when the Chinese lost contact with theory and first principles. In the U.S., loss of contact with first principles is loss of contact with the Declaration. Without this knowledge, practical implementation is impossible, and the country must necessarily stagnate and decay. Who cannot see that the democratic socialists do not understand that culture conflicts with universal rights, that racial power conflicts with civil rights, that rootedness conflicts with reason, and that Eastern despotism conflicts with self-government? These conflicts do not matter to them because they have a blind trust in the necessary progress toward the democratic-socialist future, one hostile to the Declaration and the freedoms it recognizes.

Self-government is ours to lose. It will not be lost to Russia, China or any other adversarial foreign power, but to the ever-growing state, which is granted more and more power so long as it promises to create more and more equality. The democratic socialist state does not want a citizenry but aspires to a homogeneous mass where no one falls beneath and nobody rises above.

Crushed by the force of mass society and the omnipresent state, the individual will hand his freedom to think and act over to the state. In this manner, modern civilization will create a more complete despotism than any dictator could achieve through violence. This is the real threat to American self-government — that freedom will die not with a bang but with a whimper.

Citadel professor among those honored by S.C. Arts Commission

The South Carolina Arts Commission recently announced six unique and deserving 2026 recipients of the state’s highest recognition for exceptional practice or support of contemporary art forms.

Nominations are solicited every year for people or organizations deserving recognition for outstanding achievement and contributions to the arts in South Carolina. The appointed members of the South Carolina Arts Commission Board of Directors vote on nominees recommended by a panel for the South Carolina Governor’s Awards for the Arts.

In 2026, the SCAC board approved the recommendations of the following honorees from their respective categories:

• Accessibility: Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia.

• Artist: William “Bill” Harris of McConnells.

• Individual: Tiffany Reed Silverman, Citadel professor of James Island.

• Arts in education (individual): Richard O’Malley of Florence.

• Arts in education (Organization): ArtsNOW in Columbia.

• Special award: Ian Welch of Hampton County.

As The Citadel’s first director of fine arts, Tiffany Reed Silverman (individual category) has revolutionized arts engagement within that community, with over a quarter of cadets now participating in her programs. A Beaufort native with degrees from William & Mary and Williams College, she has championed high-profile public art initiatives, including tributes to the South Carolina National Guard and the Emmanuel 9 tragedy.

A panel appointed by the SCAC Board of Directors reviews all nominations, received during a two-month window every fall. After a rigorous process and multiple meetings, the panel sends the board a recommendation from each category with a nomination for its approval. Serving on the panel in 2026 were Robin Hallyburton (Irmo), David Hodges (Columbia), Meg Reid (Spartanburg), Cindy Riddle (Campobello), and Dalisha Shingler (Columbia).

“The contributions of these distinctive individuals and organizations enrich the cultural landscapes of our communities through the arts. Justice Alito cleans the Augean Stable of faux voting rights precedents

Callais restores the VRA to its original purpose.

The Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Louisiana v. Callais may dramatically alter congressional districts in Southern states. Writing for a 6-3 majority, Justice Samuel Alito unraveled decades of confusing and misguided caselaw construing the 1965 Voting Rights Act (VRA) to hold that states may not engage in racial gerrymandering — or be forced to do so by federal courts — when drawing congressional districts. The Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause forbids race-based discrimination, Alito pointedly declared, preventing Section 2 of the VRA from being interpreted to require the creation of “majority-black” districts to comply with the VRA.

Congress enacted the VRA in 1965 (pursuant to Section 2 of the 15th Amendment) to prohibit states from disenfranchising blacks through obstacles such as poll taxes, literacy tests, property qualifications, white primaries and grandfather clauses — not to create electoral parity, a long-standing position of Justice Clarence Thomas’s that he repeated in his concurring opinion in Callais. As Justice Alito wrote for the majority, the “Voting Rights Act does not guarantee equal outcomes.”

Contrary to the claims of partisan critics, the decision in Louisiana v. Callais does not “gut” or “hollow out” the VRA. Nor, contrary to Justice Elena Kagan’s hysterical dissent, does the majority in Callais “eviscerate” the VRA or render Section 2 “all but a dead letter.” Justice Alito’s meticulous majority opinion merely prevents the VRA from being abused to dictate “proportional representation” — that is, racial quotas — contrary to the express language of Section 2, which states that “nothing in this section establishes a right to have members of a protected class elected in numbers equal to their proportion in the population.”

One of the effects of the court’s ruling will be producing Republican gains in the midterms. Improperly drawn maps, such as the Bayou State’s, will necessarily be revised to comply with Justice Alito’s narrowing of the leading VRA precedent, Thornburg v. Gingles (1986), authored 40 years ago by the notorious liberal activist Justice William Brennan. In a familiar scenario, Louisiana had created a second majority-black congressional district at the direction of a federal court, which interpreted the VRA to require greater representation for black voters. (In 2020, blacks comprised 31 percent of the state’s population.)

Reviewing and distinguishing the dense thicket of prior VRA precedents, the majority in Callais concluded that the Louisiana congressional map violates Section 2 of the VRA. Reaching this conclusion required a lengthy discussion of, and update to, the Supreme Court’s 1986 Gingles decision that caused much of the mischief and confusion under the VRA.

Alito’s mastery of the court’s labyrinthine precedents under the VRA allowed him to bring along colleagues not inclined to overrule Gingles altogether, such as Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who upheld the decision just three years ago in Allen v. Milligan (2023). Alito’s consensus-building prowess has made him a remarkably effective originalist/textualist reformer on the Supreme Court, as Mollie Hemingway explains in her recently published biography of the justice, aptly titled Alito: The Justice Who Reshaped the Supreme Court and Restored the Constitution.

Justice Alito’s majority opinion in Callais genteelly narrowed the holding of Gingles, which he contended “was decided at a time when this court often paid insufficient attention to the language of statutory provisions,” a problem evident in Justice Brennan’s opinion. Callais holds that mere disparate impact is not the type of harm that violates the VRA or the 15th Amendment.

In revisiting Gingles, the court considered the “important developments” that have occurred in the past 40 years: Jim Crow is long over; the racial gap in voter registration and turnout has largely disappeared; a robust two-party system has emerged in most states; and in recent years, the court has strictly limited the permissible use of racial distinctions. Accordingly, race-based redistricting is forbidden.

Louisiana v. Callais is consistent with the Roberts Court’s broader effort to restore the 14th Amendment’s command of color-blindness to the high court, an approach that rejects the execrable body of “living Constitution” jurisprudence that I previously described in The American Mind as “an incoherent mélange of liberal pablum, a doctrinal wasteland.” One of the major failings of the non-originalist approach to constitutional law that prevailed under the tutelage of John Roberts’s predecessors, Chief Justices Earl Warren and Warren Burger, was the absurd notion that federal civil rights laws, enacted to remedy intentional race discrimination, should be construed to create equality of results rather than equality of opportunity. In this understanding, quotas require discrimination.

Hence, in the decades prior to the Supreme Court’s 2023 decision in SFFA v. Harvard, racial preferences in higher education (that is, racial and ethnic quotas) were permitted to achieve “diversity” despite statutory bans on race discrimination. Similarly, in Griggs v. Duke Power Co. (1971), the court embraced the quota-conscious theory of “disparate impact” in employment discrimination, even though the relevant statute (Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964) prohibits only “intentional” discrimination, stating that preferential treatment is not required to achieve statistical parity in the workforce. Callais merely aligns the VRA with the race-neutrality dictated by the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.

Despite the relatively straightforward statutory language, the Supreme Court’s opinions interpreting the VRA had created a bewildering doctrinal morass, strongly suggesting that race-predominant districting was permitted — or even required — to provide adequate “opportunities” for protected minorities to elect representatives of their choice. Congressional districts are drawn by state legislatures through gerrymandering, a practice dating to the early 19th century, often for the partisan benefit of the political party that controls the legislature. Disputes concerning gerrymandering are considered non-justiciable — meaning that courts will decline to review them since they involve political matters.

As a result of the court’s muddled caselaw, liberal groups frequently filed lawsuits under Section 2 of the VRA — or threatened to do so, cowing legislators — to force states to adopt more majority-minority districts. Compounding the problem, amorphous judicial precedents made it difficult to distinguish between partisan gerrymandering (which is permitted) and maps that violate Section 2 of the VRA, particularly since blacks form a reliably Democratic voting bloc.

Many lower federal courts had construed the court’s VRA precedents to require proportional representation for blacks and other minorities despite the explicit language to the contrary in Section 2. This is what happened in Louisiana, producing marathon litigation that ended in last week’s decision.

Louisiana redrew its six congressional districts after the 2020 census to account for population shifts, initially retaining the single majority-black district in the existing map, which included much of New Orleans. VRA litigation predictably ensued, and in 2022, a federal court ordered the state to create a second majority-black district stretching some 250 miles from Shreveport to Baton Rouge. White residents objected to the unwieldy map that was created to comply with the court’s ruling. The objectors convinced a different federal court in Louisiana that the SB8 congressional map was racially gerrymandered and violated the Equal Protection Clause. In Callais, the Supreme Court agreed with that assessment.

Callais is a game-changer. States are no longer required to create election districts to achieve proportional representation — quotas, in effect. The VRA still protects voting rights, but curbs litigation abuses. In the words of Ed Blum, the champion of color-blindness who founded Students for Fair Admission, bogus VRA litigation pressured states “to sort citizens by race and draw majority-minority districts to hit demographic targets.” The court’s prior VRA caselaw was not faithful to the text of the statute or to the Equal Protection Clause. Callais corrected that, restoring the original purpose of Section 2 and moving the nation toward a race-neutral system of election law.

Though leftist pundits are denouncing the court’s ruling because much of the Democrats’ political power rests on racially gerrymandered maps that will be redrawn, the decision is a triumph of originalist/textualist analysis and equality before the law.

South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series begins

The Seabreeze Marina is where you will find the sportfishing boats and anglers participating in the first tournament of the conservation-themed South Carolina Governor’s Cup. From May 6-9, competitors will be heading to the blue water for action and returning to the dock for celebrations of victory or a toast to a good day on the water with friends and family.

Angling sportsmanship is an art to those who know it when they see it, and the late Gov. Carroll Campbell was the primary visionary behind establishing a tournament that encouraged catch and release habits among anglers.

The next tournament will be the 58th Annual Georgetown Blue Marlin Tournament, which runs May 20-23.

North Grand Strand

Inshore: Captain Smiley Fishing Charters (843) 361-7445 reports that after a good late April they have high expectations for May, and redfish, trout and black drum should all continue to be caught in the creeks as well as at the jetties. Live shrimp will catch all three species. The flounder were already arriving by the end of April, and this month more bigger fish should return. They will take mud minnows.

Cherry Grove Pier (843) 249-1625 reports that that his month they should continue to catch Spanish mackerel, bluefish and abundant whiting, and the flounder should get bigger. However, the real excitement is that water temperatures are already where they need to be for king mackerel to start the month and at some point very soon numbers of kings should arrive.

Nearshore: Captain Smiley Fishing Charters reports that bluefish and Spanish mackerel fishing was strong by the end of April, and it should get even better this month. The tail end of the bonito fishing should last into early May while big weakfish should be around a bit longer. Cobia should arrive by about the third week of May.

Inshore: Captain Caleb Hartley (843) 241-7706 reports that typically the flounder fishing turns on earlier, but at the end of April the fish began to show up in impressive numbers. They will eat mud minnows, finger mullet, and more. May is usually not a great month for trout in Murrells Inlet, but redfish usually feed better this month. They will eat a variety of cut and live baits.

Nearshore: Captain Caleb Hartley reports that bluefish, Spanish mackerel, spadefish, and king mackerel should all bite well this month.

Georgetown

Inshore: Captain Greg Holmes (843) 241-0594 reports that by the end of April redfish were moving towards their warm weather patterns and feeding more consistently, and May should see even more improvement. With more bait around and fish broken out of winter schools they are more dispersed but often easier to locate since they are in more places, and in May fish will take a variety of baits including live finger mullet, cut mullet, mud minnows, and shrimp. Trout will also feed better this month, and in May big trout should be caught around the moon phases when they spawn in the rivers. Live shrimp are hard to beat but they will also take artificial baits like Vudu shrimp. Flounder will also get more prolific as they return inshore, and by the end of April some keepers had already arrived. The jetties should also be loaded with sheepshead, black drum and more.

Alphabet/Aleph Bet. אלף בת

The Hebrew alphabet evolved from its pictorial origins about 4,000 years ago. Each letter evolved from a picture of a specific word. The word alphabet evolved from first two letters of Hebrew, Aleph א and Bet ב .The word representing the letters of writing came to be called in English, the Alphabet.

The ancient Hebrew word for ox was Aleph. Its head and horn were drawn and became symbolized, then rotated. The second letter, Bet, was first a house, bayit.

The ancient Hebrew alphabet was adopted by the Greeks around the 12th century BCE. The first five letters of the Hebrew alphabet are aleph, beyt, gimel and dalet. These same letters, adopted by the Greeks, became the alpha, beta, gamma and delta.

The early ancient languages, such as Akkadian and Sumerian, were pictures that then became symbolic representation and then had sounds associated with each symbol, often from the first sound of the word/symbol. Egyptian hieroglyphics were also pictographs with associated sounds but never became a true alphabet.

The oldest biblical text we have in its entirety is the Book of Isaiah, housed in the Israel Museum’s the Shrine of the Book. It is dated to 200 BCE and is almost identical to modern version. The extant biblical texts use the modern square letters that can be read with a bit of effort by those who reads modern Hebrew.

Morning bird walk at Caw Caw

Experience one or more of the regular bird walks at the Caw Caw Interpretive Center. They will trek through many distinct habitats and allow to view and discuss a variety of birds, butterflies and other organisms.

This 1046 acre site was once part of several rice plantations that flourished in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Landscape alterations from this period contribute to the site’s current habitat diversity and is a main factor behind the wide variety of wildlife seen at the park. This birding checklist is the result of many bird walks throughout the park since 1985. Currently, 274 bird species have been recorded at Caw Caw Interpretive Center.

Who is the ultimate Hump Day man?

What is Hump Day without … remembering that crooner Englebert HUMPerdinck turned 90 this past Saturday. Born Arnold George Dorsey in Madras, British India, he changed his name to Engelbert Humperdinck in 1965 when manager Gordon Mills told him he needed a stage name and suggested he use the moniker of a largely forgotten German composer.

With a honey-smooth voice and appealing personality, Humperdinck became an admired crooner with “Release Me,” “There Goes My Everything” and “A Man Without Love.” He found great American chart success with “After the Lovin’” of five decades ago.

He is a widower and still performs now and then. The ultimate Hump Day gent is a global real estate investor and became a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2021 for honors for service to music.

The left’s problem with political violence continues to metastasize

After the third close assassination attempt against Donald Trump in less than two years, the agenda of the left is now impossible to ignore or tolerate. In this case, the intended assassin, Cole Tomas Allen, had no criminal background, and wasn’t insane, impoverished or uneducated. Quite the opposite. Allen was from an affluent family and held highly technical undergraduate and graduate degrees from respected institutions. Just months ago, America witnessed the horrendous murder of Charlie Kirk by a leftist, radical, transsexual, Tyler Robinson. Robinson believed, like Allen, his action was justified. Weeks before, the leftist Southern Poverty Law Center had put Kirk and his TPUSA on their “hate map” for anti-transsexual “hate.” In the aftermath of that killing, thousands of liberals around the country gloated about the killing. Some even posted lists of other conservatives they wanted were assassinated, like Ben Shapiro and others. Months prior to Kirk’s murder, leftist Luigi Mangione murdered an executive (father/husband) and instantly became a hero to many on the left and he remains a leftist folk hero.

After four decades without a close assassination attempt, two presidential assassination attempts were made against Trump within months. After the first attempt, Democrats admitting their rhetoric crossed the line, like President Biden demanding a “bullseye” on Trump before the shooting. Unfortunately, the leftist repentance lasted only days before they doubled down. After those assassination attempts, leftists firebombed Tesla EVs nationwide in opposition to Elon Musk and “DOGE.” Around that time, young Israeli embassy couple was murdered by a leftist pro-Palestinian and a radical Muslim immigrant lit Jews in Colorado on fire.

These acts of leftist violence were not in a vacuum. In several documented cases around that time, colleges cancelled conservative speaking events due to the danger of violence and death threats against conservative speakers. The murder of Kirk was a natural consequence of this new leftist belief system. Kirk was not hateful, racist or misogynist, but a sincere Christian who stood by his biblical worldview. I saw a clip of small older liberal man challenge Kirk to a fight during a debate (Kirk is 6’5 and could have beaten the guy to a pulp). Kirk did not engage despite being called a coward. He wanted to engage in dialogue to prevent violence.

In the aftermath of this newest assassination attempt, the left has become even more unhinged in their reaction. Instead of what happened for a few days after the Butler assassination attempt, when high visibility Democrats acknowledged their rhetoric crossed the line, the left has given up any self-awareness of the hatred. House Minority Leader, Hakeem Jeffries, didn’t apologize for his “we are in an era of maximum warfare, everywhere, all the time” right before the assassination attempt. Following the post-assassination attempt, the White House statement sums this up perfectly: “The attack was not random; it was the predictable result of years of reckless, inflammatory and escalating rhetoric from Democrats. By relentlessly smearing President Trump, his administration, and tens of millions of Americans as “fascists,” “Nazis” and “threats,” these sick Democrats have created a toxic environment that incites their supporters to violence again and again.”

Jesus tells us in John 3:15: “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer.” The left has generated such intense hate against conservatives it has metastasized into murder. Growing more violent every day. It must stop now.

Drawing on primary sources, battlefield archaeology and recent scholarship, Durant Ashmore will examine key battles of the Backcountry, the leaders and dedicated militia who fought them, and the civilian populations often caught in the middle. The series will highlight how guerrilla warfare, local loyalties and geographic factors shaped the course of the war in the Palmetto State, ultimately and directly influencing the outcome of the Revolution.

Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday, and families around the nation will honor the mothers in their lives with gifts and lots of love. A ‘70s soul classic, “I’ll Always Love My Mama” from The Intruders embodies the admiration we have for our hard-working mothers.

Philadelphia soul group The Intruders released “I’ll Always Love My Mama” in 1973 as one of the singles from their fourth studio album, Save The Children. The song was written by Philly musical legends Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff of Philadelphia International Records fame and it was released on the Excel/Gamble recording label.

R&B duo and songwriters Gene McFadden and John Whitehead co-wrote the track with Gamble and Huff, which was partly inspired by Gamble’s mother, Ruby, who passed in 2012. Of their two-dozen charting R&B hits including their #1 1968 hit “Cowboys to Girls,” “I’ll Always Love My Mama” remains one of the group’s most loved songs.

Today, the last living original member of The Intruders is Phillip Terry as Eugene Daughty, Sam Brown, and Robert Edwards have all passed, as have the song’s co-writers McFadden and Whitehead.

Aiken Symphony Brahms & Schumann concert

Japanese violinist Risa Hokamura, whose playing has been praised as “both powerful and reflective, sweet and steely,” will join the Aiken Symphony Orchestra in its performance of Brahms’ exquisite Violin Concerto. The work, originally thought to be unplayable due to its great difficulty, was composed for Brahms’ dear friend, Joseph Joachim, a towering virtuoso of his day. He was also the owner of a Stradivarius violin, on which Hokamura will perform. The concerto is paired with the Rhenish Symphony by one of Brahms’ other great friends, Robert Schumann.

Gaston Chiquet, Rose Premiere Cru NV

Background

Gaston Chiquet is a historic, family-run Grower Champagne producer based Aÿ (Vallée de la Marne, Dizy). Established in 1919 by Fernand and Gaston Chiquet, the brothers were among the first to break from selling grapes to large houses, instead bottling their own and unknowingly, at the time, become one of the original “grower champagnes.” Known for elegant, fruit-forward profiles, Chiquet is highly regarded for the houses Blanc de Blancs d’Aÿ (truly exceptional, especially the Special Club).

Profile

The Premiere Cru possesses a distinctive, bright unmistakably pink color. It is composed of 40 percent Pinot Noir, 30 percent Chardonnay, and 30 percent Meunier. The wine is expressive on opening, with a profile revealing ripe notes of nectarine, crushed berries, candied flowers, and wet stone. Somewhat pithy, it has an orange rind texture. The Pinot Noir lends much of the structure to the wine, and it presents an innate ability to carry through a meal through finish.

The estate vines are more than 45 years old, a rarity in this particular region. Parcels are harvested and vinified separately in stainless steel. There is no wood at the estate (aging done in stainless steel vats) as the holdings in mainly south facing crus, with an older selection of massal cuttings, providing sufficient body and depth. Pressing is done with two large vertical PAI presses helping to refine the must. Malolactic fermentation helps to balance the acidity in the final production.

Vital stats for vintage and when to sip

Aged 15-18 months on the lees. Disgorged May 2023, with 88 percent harvested in 2021, 12 percent in 2020. Dosage: 6g/L. Drink it during the next four to five years.

Tasting Notes

Medium-bodied on the palate, crisp and fleshy. Presents a certain elegance comparable to that of several more significant houses in Reims. Offers hints of a textured mousse, with flavors ranging from almond biscotti to strawberry fruit, and a touch of anise somethings ginger root.

Price

Good value. Approximately $50 - $60 through various online retail shops.

Production Volume

Roughly 14,000 cases annually, a small fraction imported to the United States.

America’s war in the Americas, Part II

Because of the Trump administration, the United States finally has a strategy.

What comes next will have to be seen to be fully understood. In this new strategic territory, we have mostly the precedents of the past year and the first Trump term to guide us. What seems to be emerging is a model of offshore presence (mostly naval) that is sustained in the Caribbean basin by a reconstituted network of American facilities.

At the successful conclusion of the Panama invasion in early 1990, the U.S. possessed a constellation of bases throughout the region for the provision of regional security, its own security, and the defense of the Panama Canal. Within a decade, the U.S. had surrendered nearly all of it, and by the beginning of the second Trump term, even local-regime partnerships across the region had mostly collapsed. Narco-regime leaders, including Bolivia’s Evo Morales and Mexico’s Andrés Manuel López Obrador, for example, had effectively ended cooperation with American law enforcement, and a partnership with the American military was unthinkable.

That position has been clawed back in a hurry during the first year of the second Trump administration, thanks in no small part to a remarkable operational partnership between the secretaries of state and war. The focus has been on the Caribbean basin, including the littoral of the old Gran Colombia—what Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has termed “Greater North America.” Now we will see how much further the U.S. will extend its footprint.

While an enduring presence in that geographic sphere is likely, what is not likely, and certainly not as desirable, is a commitment of permanent forces in the immense South American interior. Raids such as those in Ecuador are for political signaling as much as military efficacy. U.S. troops will no doubt be sent again elsewhere in the vast, ungoverned spaces that characterize the continent. The Colombian Amazon, the Peruvian Andes, the Bolivian Altiplano and the Paraguayan Gran Chaco are all candidates for action. To the extent that the new model is viable long-term, it enables partner regimes to consolidate internal stability and facilitates the improvement and operations of their own armed forces.

The alternatives of disengagement and militarization, proponents of the plan would argue, have been tried, and they have failed. For all the strategic and operational cautions at hand, the main point should not be missed: Those proponents are probably correct.

Tres problemas

Missing at Doral were three of the major states and regimes at the heart of the narco-terror problem in the Western Hemisphere: Mexico, Colombia and Cuba.

The Mexican regime, helmed by a political party in MORENA with its own dubious past of cartel partnerships, is struggling to stay out of American sights as a target for action: The recent killing of the Jalisciense cartel boss “El Mencho” can be interpreted as an effort toward this end, an offering to the Americans in lieu of the narco-politicos the Americans have demanded. The public announcement of U.S. aid in the operation is evidence for it, tying the Americans to the Mexicans’ preferred approach.

Yet that regime now confronts the reality that the Americans are setting up a hemispheric superstructure in pursuit of the narco-terrorists, and — not least because President Trump’s personal prestige is committed to it — they will expect Mexico to join it sooner rather than later. This is an insoluble problem for the Mexican regime absent the strategic choices it has been unwilling to make. Having chosen to harbor cartel-aligned politicians within its leadership for years, it deserves no sympathy for the wrenching decisions ahead.

For the Colombians, burdened with the far-left ex-terrorist President Gustavo Petro, but with legislative elections this month and a presidential election in May, it is a waiting game. Colombia is arguably the keystone nation for American strategy in South America. Whether it aligns with or against the U.S.’s efforts is consequential in ways that the choices of other nations are not.

In the opening of the American Civil War in 1861, Abraham Lincoln wrote of Kentucky’s indispensable geography that “to lose Kentucky is nearly the same as to lose the whole game.” Colombia is now surpassingly important for similar reasons. American strategy and operations alike await the choices of that nation’s electorate. But given the influence that many of the narco-cartels have on that electorate in their quasi-sovereign control of Colombia’s rural areas, we may ask whether American action may make itself felt there before the ballots are cast.

Cuba, finally, has been pronounced the next domino to fall to American grand strategy, not just in the hemisphere but globally. As of this writing, there are reports that the Cuban regime is close to agreeing to a sort of concordat with the U.S. in a bid to save itself, much as Delcy Rodríguez and her clique did in Venezuela. The Cuban dictator Miguel Díaz-Canel has publicly announced the existence of negotiations, and there is at least one confirmed report of a crowd of angry Cubans sacking a local headquarters of the Communist Party. There are also reports that the U.S. is planning direct military intervention on the island.

When and if events there culminate — an epochal triumph for the U.S. if it does — that regime too will be folded into the greater ACCC, either de facto or de jure. Cuba will, for a time at least, revert to what it was in the generation after its first independence: a strategic ward of the U.S., this time with no need for a Platt Amendment to validate American stewardship. Given the Cuban Communist regime’s long history of support for, and creation of, the very narco-terror networks America now confronts, the trove of intelligence — not just on those cartels, but on their state partners — will be prodigious and revelatory.

The whole game hinges upon the credibility and presence of American hard power. In January it was real and compelling because it was visibly present. In March, the USS Gerald R. Ford, the sole capital vessel of the Caracas raid, was on the other side of the world, pursuing an entirely different war — although not a wholly unconnected one, as the Iranians established their terror networks in Latin America decades ago and have enhanced them since. That conflict draws in ever-growing echelons of American forces from all corners of the world. SOUTHCOM is not immune to the widening gyre. Nevertheless, it is notable that when the Ford left, it was replaced by the venerable USS Nimitz, whose planned 2026 decommissioning is now delayed to 2027 for this strategic mission.

One may ask whether and when the regimes in Havana and Mexico City might conclude that the American threat, real as it is, is also impermanent. To this end, the Congress ought to urgently consider making the Trump administration’s strategic and deployment innovations in the Western Hemisphere permanent by legislation. The alternative is a swift reversal by a next administration less confident in American power abroad.

America has a strategy in the Western Hemisphere, and the Trump administration is taking the U.S. and its armed forces places it has never been, for reasons it has never confronted in quite this way. As policy, it is eminently defensible. The verdict of history will refrain from making a pronouncement until the age to come. What we can say, though, is this: It is happening, and it is popular. In an American right otherwise fractious over matters of war and peace, from NATO to Ukraine to Taiwan to Iran, the desirability of American hard power in the Western Hemisphere is the one point of unity. It means shots fired, troops deployed and new strategic commitments, but this — not yesterday’s false peace — is what they voted for.

Coastal Gardening Festival postponed until Sunday

Due to a rainy/stormy/windy forecast for Saturday, the Coastal Gardening Festival will be held on Sunday, May 3 at the Baum Center from 9-2. More than 2,300 plants will be on sale.

Expect a day of plant sales, bake sale, vendors, education, children’s activities and fun. The Baum Center’s master gardeners have raised their plans on the Outer Banks and are more hopeful to thrive and survive in our coastal area. There will be many native plants as well as houseplants, vegetables, shrubs, trees and more.

Grab your wagon, friends, family, kids, dogs and reusable bags and come out for the Coastal Gardening Festival; you won’t go home empty handed.

Unlocking cultural treasure, Part XXXVI

Yenta יענטא

For most of its lifespan, Yenta יענטא. has been a Yiddish female name, derived from Yentel, which comes from the French word “gentille” (nice or pleasant).

In common American Jewish culture, heavily influenced by the Yiddish theater and media of the 20th century, “Yenta” has come to refer to a talkative and nosy woman. Yenta’s loquacious, overbearing, nosy personality is apparently a credit to Yente Telebende, a fictional character who was born in New York’s Yiddish newspapers and soon created an Yiddish early 20th century musical production of the same name.

The matchmaker part associated with the name came several decades later, deriving from the character named Yenta in Fiddler on the Roof who is both a matchmaker and overly involved in other people’s business.
